What is Masjid al-Haram and why is it the most sacred mosque in Islam?
Masjid al-Haram is the Sacred Mosque in Makkah that surrounds the Ka'bah - the qiblah of every Muslim. One prayer here equals 100,000 prayers elsewhere. It is the only mosque toward which Muslims travel for the rituals of Umrah and Hajj.
Significance & history
Masjid al-Haram encloses the Ka'bah, the Hajar al-Aswad, Maqam Ibrahim, the well of Zamzam, and Safa & Marwah. It is the first house of worship established for humanity (Qur'an 3:96). Its expansion - from the courtyard around Ibrahim's ﷺ original structure to today's multi-level Grand Mosque - has continued through the Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Ottoman, and Saudi periods.

Role in the ritual
All Umrah and Hajj rituals inside Makkah take place within or around the Masjid: Tawaf around the Ka'bah in the Mataf, Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, drinking Zamzam, and praying two rak'ah behind Maqam Ibrahim.
Etiquette
- Enter with the right foot and recite the masjid-entry dua.
- Keep voice low; the Haram is a place of reverence, not tourism.
- Do not obstruct the Mataf during Tawaf - join the flow smoothly.
- Dress modestly; men in Ihram must keep their right shoulder uncovered only during Tawaf al-Qudum.
- Follow gate signs and staff instructions, especially in peak hours.

- Exiting: Allahumma innī as'aluka min faḍlik.
