From Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ to today: how the Holy City was built.
How did Makkah become the holiest city in Islam?
Makkah rose around the well of Zamzam and the Ka'bah - the first house of worship, built by Ibrahim ﷺ and Isma'il ﷺ. Over millennia, its Quraysh tribes maintained the Ka'bah until the Prophet ﷺ was born there in 570 CE, restored pure tawhid, and made it the qiblah of Islam.
Significance & history
Makkah's role begins with the Qur'anic account of Ibrahim ﷺ leaving Hajar ﷺ and Isma'il ﷺ in a barren valley. Zamzam's flow attracted the Jurhum tribe, then the Quraysh. Islam restored the Ka'bah's monotheistic purpose in 630 CE (Fatḥ Makkah). Ottoman and Saudi expansions have grown the Haram from a small mosque to today's multi-level Grand Mosque.
