What happened at Mount Uhud and why do Muslims visit?
In 3 AH, the Battle of Uhud was fought at the foot of this mountain. Seventy Companions were martyred, including the Prophet's ﷺ uncle Hamza ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it." Pilgrims visit to send salam to the martyrs and reflect on the lessons of Uhud.
Significance & history
The battle taught the ummah the cost of disobeying the Prophet's ﷺ orders - the archers left their post at Jabal ar-Rumah, allowing a counter-attack. Hamza ﷺ, Mus'ab ibn Umayr ﷺ, and many others were martyred. The Prophet ﷺ himself was wounded, but Islam and Madinah endured.

Role in the ritual
Not a Hajj or Umrah rite. A Sunnah-informed ziyarah: greet the martyrs with the reported salam of graves, make dua for them, avoid tying threads or seeking anything from them.
Etiquette
- Do not climb over the graves' perimeter fencing.
- Send salam to the martyrs and Hamza ﷺ from outside the enclosure.
- Do not ask the deceased for anything - all dua is to Allah alone.
- Avoid vendors selling amulets or performing bid'ah rituals.
- Wear sturdy shoes if climbing Jabal ar-Rumah.
