The Rituals of Hajj - Day by Day

Overview

Hajj is performed from 8 to 13 Dhul-Hijjah. The pilgrim enters ihram at Miqat, moves to Mina on 8 Dhul-Hijjah, performs Wuquf at Arafat on the 9th, spends the night at Muzdalifah, then on the 10th performs Rami of Jamrat al-Aqabah, Qurbani, Halq, and Tawaf al-Ifadah, completes Rami during the Days of Tashreeq, and finally performs Tawaf al-Wada. 【BOOK: Overview - proofed content from »Jab Qafilay Haram Ko Chalay«】

    1. Ihram, Miqat & Hajj types (Tamattu' / Qiran / Ifrad)

    At Miqat: perform ghusl, wear ihram, make niyyah. Pakistanis most commonly perform Hajj al-Tamattu' - Umrah first, then a fresh ihram for Hajj on 8 Dhul-Hijjah. 【BOOK】

    2. 8 Dhul-Hijjah - Yawm al-Tarwiyah (Mina)

    Move to Mina before Zuhr. Pray Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and the next Fajr at Mina - each shortened (qasr). 【BOOK】

    3. 9 Dhul-Hijjah - Wuquf at Arafat

    After Zawal, stand at Arafat until sunset - the greatest pillar of Hajj. Spend it in dua, dhikr, and istighfar. Missing this day means Hajj is missed. 【BOOK】

    4. Muzdalifah

    Leave Arafat after sunset for Muzdalifah; pray Maghrib and Isha there combined, spend the night, and collect pebbles for Rami. 【BOOK】

    5. 10 Dhul-Hijjah - Rami, Qurbani, Halq, Tawaf al-Ifadah

    Throw seven pebbles at Jamrat al-Aqabah, then perform Qurbani (sacrifice), then Halq (men - shave, preferred) or Taqsir. Proceed to Makkah for Tawaf al-Ifadah, followed by Sa'i if not already done. 【BOOK】

    6. 11-13 Dhul-Hijjah - Days of Tashreeq

    Stay at Mina and perform Rami on all three Jamarat (Sughra, Wusta, Aqabah) after Zawal each day. Leaving before sunset on the 12th is permitted (Ta'ajjul). 【BOOK】

    7. Tawaf al-Wada

    Before leaving Makkah, perform seven circuits of the Kaaba - the farewell rite of Hajj. It is waived for menstruating women. 【BOOK】

Dua at Arafat

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu al-mulku wa lahu al-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir

اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، وہ اکیلا ہے، اس کا کوئی شریک نہیں، اسی کی بادشاہی ہے اور اسی کی حمد ہے، اور وہ ہر چیز پر قادر ہے۔

Common mistakes

  • !Leaving Arafat before sunset on 9 Dhul-Hijjah - this invalidates the pillar of Wuquf.
  • !Breaking the preferred order on the 10th - Rami, Qurbani, Halq, then Tawaf al-Ifadah.
  • !Throwing Jamarat pebbles before Zawal during the Days of Tashreeq.
  • !Staying long in Makkah after Tawaf al-Wada - it should be the final rite before departure.
  • !Skipping the Muzdalifah stop (except for the weak, sick, or authorised concessions).
